From 1608 to 1885, 1900 convicts were sent into
exile in Hachijojima. Welcomed by the indiginous population
they carved out a living here. Many traditions and artifacts
remain today as a testiment to these hardy individuals.
The local Flora and Fauna is diverse as it is varied.
There are also many introduced species which are also
in abundance ranging from the Hibiscus lined streets
to fields of Fresia, Aloe Vera, Bird of Paradise, etc.

Various flowers bloom throughout the year. One of the
most impressive is the freesia festival. Running from
March to May. Others to look for are the Aloe vera and
Birds of Paradise fields.

time is during the rainy season mid June to mid July.

A
defining product of this island. This distinct yellow
fabric hand died and woven has been a major export for
generations here and still is. So famous it's known nation
wide!
Hachijo's
historic thatched roof village gives you an idea of the
lifestyle of many islanders in history past. This hut,
used to store grain and food, was raised on stilts to
keep rats and other wild animals out.

Located
in the Botanical Gardens this informative and interactive
centre is a must see and is the best way to get orientated

The
gardens surrounding the Visitor Centre are a place to
relax, rejuvenate, and experience the wonders and diversity
of Hachijojima's natural fauna. A great place for a picnic.
