Japans festivals are legendary and Hachijojimas
are no exception. Although smaller than mainland ones
what they lack in size they make up for in zest. The
bulk of the islands festivals take place around the
Summer season. Beer, shochu and various kinds of local
foods are consumed in large quantities usually to the
hypnotic beat of Hachijo Taiko. Hachijo's festivals
are the highlight of island life and are always a lot
of fun and a great way to make new friends.
Hachijo :: Summer Festival
Hachijo :: Fireworks
This is the main festival of the year running over three
nights from July 23rd to 25th. Great food, drinks and
atmosphere. Not to be missed.
The
fireworks festival is on August the 11th from 6pm. Literally
the whole island is there to enjoy the display on the
main beach and port of Sokodo.
Hachijo :: Taiko
Hachijo :: Local Festivals
Hachijo
taiko is unique to Japan as two people play at the same
time. Island festivals would not be the same without this
ancient custom.
Many
small local festivals are run throughout the year but
are too numerous to list here. Trust to ladyluck you stumble
onto one of them.
